There are so many great benefits to track lighting, it's simple to design,
install, is flexible, simple to change and redesign in no time at all. By
following the simple steps below, you can install new track lighting or update
your existing lighting system.
Step 1: Choose a Track Standard
The basis of any track lighting system is the track, which is the part that will
be attached to either the ceiling or wall. This is also, where the light
fixtures will be fastened. Therefore, it is extremely important to remember that
not all track lighting fixtures will fit every type of track. There are three
standards,
which were developed by the pioneering manufacturers of track lighting. The
three standards are: Halo, Juno, and Lightolier. It is also important to
remember that there are several other proprietary track systems available on the
market that are NOT compatible with the above standards. These proprietary track
systems usually are cheaper systems that are constructed of flimsy material, and
restricted you
to their limited track light fixtures. Many times, these proprietary systems
have very limited warranties, and may only remain in business for a few years.
Therefore, to avoid any problems, it is recommend that you select a system for
one of the three standards, Halo, Juno, or Lightolier. When replacing or
repairing any fixture or accessories, it must be with the same standard.
Step 2: Layout and Power
Now that you have decided on the type of standard you want, your next step is
deciding exactly where you want to install your track lighting. Tracks come in a
range of different lengths and connectors so that you can create the ideal
layout that is right for your room. One important factor you will have to
consider when deciding where your track lighting will be installed is the need
for electrical power.
Power can be supplied to your system by two primarily methods, the first being a
power supply connected to a junction box, and the second is a power cord leading
from the track to a standard electrical outlet. When using a plug and cord set
to connect a live end connector to a plug on a wall, ensure that you are using
the correct plug set for your system and that you will also need a live end
connector. Plug sets are much easier to install, however, you may have to be
creative as to how you conceal the cord.
To connect the track to a junction box with a connector, you must use a Floating
Canopy Connector, for power anywhere along the length of the track, except at
the ends, or a Live End Connector for power only at an end of the track. It may
be necessary to use a Canopy Plate to completely cover the junction box
underneath the Live End Connector. By using a Floating Canopy Connector or a
Live End Connector, you will have a finished professionally designed. If you do
not already have an existing junction box in your ceiling, then you may need to
contact an electrician and have one installed for you. |
